Biography of Speaker

Gary Chinga was born in La Serena, Chile. He received the degrees of Master of Science in Cell biology in 1997 and PhD in Chemical engineering in 2002 at the Norwegian University of Science and Technology (NTNU), Norway. He is now research scientist at the Paper and Fibre Research Institute (PFI), Trondheim, Norway.

Abstract

A detailed description of gradient analysis based on Sobel operators is given. Parameters like the gradient magnitude, orientation, mean resultant vector and surface area can be derived from the analysis. The surface development of paper exposed to different printing conditions was used for exemplification. The gradient magnitude seems to be a robust descriptor of the changes caused by an ink and water film after printing. The gradient orientation is also valuable for quantifying the orientation of the small gradients. This gives valuable information for detecting the preferred orientations of structures.
